A discussion about the shocking realities of the global food industry with Raj Patel and Professor Timothy Lang.

Writer, activist and academic, Raj Patel is best known for his book ‘Stuffed and Starved: Markets, Power and the Hidden Battle for the World Food System‘. He is currently a visiting scholar at the Center for African Studies, University of California at Berkeley, a Fellow at the Institute of Food and Development Policy and a Research Associate at the School of Development Studies at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. His new book ‘The Value of Nothing: How to Reshape Market Society and Redefine Democracy‘ was published in December 2009.

Timothy Lang has been Professor of Food Policy at City University since November 2002. He was Director of the Centre for Food Policy at Thames Valley University from 1994 to 2002, before it moved to City University. He is a regular advisor to the World Health Organization and has been a consultant to four House of Commons Select Committee inquiries (food standards [twice], globalisation and obesity). He is also the author of ‘The Unmanageable Consumer: Contemporary Consumption and its Fragmentation‘ (with Gabriel Yiannis) and ‘Food Wars: the Battle for Mouths, Minds and Markets‘ (with Michael Heasman) among others.
