Censorship Research Center (CRC)
A non-profit organisation founded to serve as the legal entity which will provide anti-censorship education, outreach, and technologies for free to those who need it most. It’s first major project was Haystack which seeks to provide access to information and communications to the Iranian people in the wake of recent restrictions imposed by the government of Iran.

International Freedom of Expression eXchange (IFEX)
A network of organisations that monitors, promotes and defends freedom of expression worldwide. IFEX was established as a way to exchange information on free speech issues and coordination campaigns.

Article 19
An NGO dedicated to the defence of free speech and a free press. They provide legal and professional training, monitor threats to freedom of expression and campaign for the highest standards of freedom of expression globally.

Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ)
A non-profit organisation that promotes press freedom by revealing abuses against journalists and acting on behalf of imprisoned and threatened journalists worldwide.

Free Press Unlimited
Free Press Unlimited works to ensure that quality news and information are and remain available to people across the globe. Including people in countries where there is little to no press freedom. By supporting local media professionals and journalists, Free Press Unlimited aims to help people gain and keep access to the information they require to survive and develop.

Index on Censorship
A British-based organisation that campaigns on issues of freedom of expression. It produces a news website as well as an award-winning magazine.

Glasnost Defence Foundation
A non-profit organisation founded by a group of prominent Russian journalists and film-makers. It works alongside other international NGOs to defend journalists and protect freedom of expression in Russia.

Independent Media Centre
A network of collectively-run, independent and alternative media outlets established to cover the 1999 World Trade Organisation protests in Seattle. It produces documentaries, podcasts, a Seattle-based newspaper and an online open-publishing model that has been copied by media activists across the world.

World Press Freedom Committee
An organisation set up to combat an authoritarian trend towards restrictive press controls. As well as coordinating the activities of nine major free-press organisations, it administers a global monitoring programme of press freedom issues at UNESCO, the UN and other intergovernmental groups.

Media Resistance
A project established by journalists and media professionals in Africa to share information and experiences of defending human rights and improving press freedoms. It works alongside the The Panos Institute to promote an independent media in central Africa.

Reporters Without Borders
An international organisation that fights for press freedom by investigating abuses, exposing perpetrators and supporting threatened journalists. It is registered in France as a non-profit organisation and has consultant status at the UN.

Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press
An organisation that started out as a defence project for journalists facing legal action from the US Government. It offers cost-free legal help and is a resource for free speech issues, producing a quarterly legal review, a newsletter, a 24-hour hotline, and various handbooks on media law issues.

Network for the Defence of Independent Media in Africa
A media and human rights NGO based in Kenya that encourages and safeguards freedom of expression in Africa. It hosts training collaborations with World Free Press Institute (WFPI), UNESCO and the Ford Foundation, and was part of the struggle which brought about media independence to Kenya.

Norwegian Forum for Freedom of Expression
An association of Norwegian media organisations founded as a documentation and information resource for freedom of speech issues worldwide. While it closed down in 2001, the group’s work lives on in projects such as the Beacon for Freedom of Expression.

The Media Institute, Kenya
A Kenyan NGO, established in 1996 to offer protection and legal aid to journalists in distress. It reopened after a three year hiatus following the 2002 elections in response to a series government assaults on the media.

The Media Institute of Southern Africa
An NGO that promotes a free, independent and pluralistic media in Africa, as envisaged in the 1991 Windhoek Declaration.

Journaliste en Danger, Democratic Republic of Congo
An independent NGO founded in 1998 by a group of Congolese journalists that defends and promotes press freedom in DR Congo. It has been active in eight other Central African countries and is also a member of the International Freedom of Expression Exchange.

Democracy Now
An award-winning news program broadcasted on television, radio and on-line that represents an alternative to the US corporate media consolidation.

Critics of the Mainstream Media, Peace and War Journalism
The transcripts of a series of conferences known as theConflict and Peace Forums. Journalists, media academics and students from across the world discussed the hidden agenda that manipulate war reporting.

The Antonio Zumel Center for Press Freedom
A foundation set up in memory of the late Filipino journalist, exile and activist Antonio “Manong” Zumel. It promotes press freedom in the Philippines and runs a training program for community and campus based journalists.

One World Network
The world’s first internet portal on global justice, launched in 1995, that rapidly expanded and became a decentralised, worldwide network of 13 individual centres. It uses innovative user-generated platforms to connect citizens in the northern and southern continents with the aim of triggering positive social change.
