
Roman is the Investigations Editor of Novaya Gazeta, the Moscow-based newspaper for which Anna Politkovskaya also worked.
He graduated from Moscow State Teachers’ Training University biology and chemist faculty in 1997. He then attended the High School of Journalism at the International University in Moscow.
After several years working part-time for Novaya Gazeta, he joined the paper as a full-time correspondent in 1999 to work in its information section. He became deputy head of the department, then moved into the investigations section and finally became the investigations editor.
His work at Novaya Gazeta focused on stories involving corruption, protectionism, conflicts of interests and the abuse of power at the highest levels of state officialdom
His uncompromising investigations in often dangerous circumstances have received considerable recognition.
He received the “Journalists against corruption” and “Journalistic investigation” awards from the Russian Union of Journalists in 2000 and 2003, as well as the Mayor of Moscow journalist prize in 2002 and the Transparency International “Integrity Award” in 2008.
In 2009, the Freedom of Expression Foundation and ZEIT Foundation awarded Roman “Free Press of Russia”.
He is a member of the ICIJ project (International Consortium of Investigative Journalists), the OCCRP (Organised Crime and Corruption Reporting Project) and SCOOP from 2008.
